The HCM research project is a result of collaboration between veterinarians, breeders, universities and genetics laboratories of international renown.

The objective of the HCM Research Project is to coordinate and standardize the collection of clinical, echocardiographic and genetic data in order to provide the Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy management guide line, which can be shared by veterinarians and breeders.

Primary hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a hereditary pathology, from a clinical and echocardiographic point of view, which manifests most often after reaching sexual maturity.
HCM is a cat heart disease caused by a change in DNA. This disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant feature.

The cause of HCM is caused by a change in DNA for the gene which determines mutation in an autosomal dominant way, high permeability and variable expression.
The HCM Research Project covers all breeds predisposed to the development of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Birman, Pers, Bengal, Norwegian Forest, Siberian, Sphinx, Scottish Fold.
